OPOSSUM SKINS
ANNUAL RETURN. At a meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society held this week, a statement was read from the Department of Internal Affairs showing the receipts and expenditure, and the number of skins taken in connection with the trapping of opossums. Receipts for the 1924 season amounted to £6071/15/10, the principal items being royalties (£4799/11/-) and licenses (£1136/14/1). The expenditure amounted to £6044/12/10, made up as follows: Payments to acclimatisation societies, £2848/18/-; Forestry Department £2784 12/2; Lands Department (Kapiti Island), £l3/17/4; cost of administration .and incidental expenses, £394/15/3; fees refunded £2/10/-. The total number of skins taken amounted to 95,991, made us as follows: —Auckland, 145; Buller, 1619; Grey, 3966; Hawera 209; Nelson, 3387; North Canterbury, 3943; Otago, 23,930; Rotorua, 6918; South Canterbury, 1602; Southland, 1638; Taranaki, 3941; Waimate 610; Wanganui, 2611; Wellington, 36,720; Westland, 4989 ; Kapiti Island, 297. It will be rjotioed that (appji’oximalteily one third of the skins were taken in the Wellington district. 1
