Before proceeding with the business,Mayor referred to the death of the Prime Minister and the great loss the country had sustained by his death. He also referred to the great services Mr Massey had rendered the country in the time of great trials. He moved that the Council offer its sympathy to the deceased statesman’s family. The motion was carried in silence, members The retiring Mayor reported on having interviewed the Minister of Mines re a grant for St. Hilda road, and explained that the Minister would give £1 for £1 up to £l5O providing the Harbour Board found the balance. He also mentioned that he and Cr Carse would be waiting on the Harbour Board at its next meeting re Harbour Board leases, and if the Council desired would put the matter before them. —-It was resolved that Cr Carse represent the Borough at the deputation. The Overseer’s report was received and adopted. It was resolved to adopt the Uniform identification disc as suggested by the Grey County Council. Complaints from several councillors re motorists speeding in tha Borough were heard, and it was resolved that notices be erected at each end of the borough, advising motorists to respect a speed limit and failing their doing so prosecutions would follow, and asking the roadman to report any case coming under his notice. The Government Statistician wrote acknowledging receipt of building returns for year. —The Clerk was authorised to make enquiries re bujlding permits and report at next meeting. The Public Trustee wrote notifying transfer otlots in Stillwater to Thomas Harper.—Transfer granted and roll amended accordingly. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Railway Department to the slippery state of the overhead bridge leading to Stillwater station. The urgent necessity for a new post office was mentioned ,and it was resolved to approach the PastmasterGeneral re same. Committees were then elected to attend to the various duties for the ensuing term. Accounts amounting to £l9B were presented and passed for payment whbn money was available, and the National Bank of New Zealand was to be asked to advance money by overdraft. This concluded the business, and the Council are to meet in a fortnight to go into other matters affecting the welfare of the borough. The Dobson mine is daily increasing its output, and the coal finds a ready .sale, it being of excellent quality. It is understood that the bins are to he commenced immediately, and are to be of an up-to-date character. The re-opening of the Wallsend mine is proceeding,. and given some good weather this mine should also be producing coal inside of two months. The winding engine has arrived and is being placed in position .it being only a temporary one until unwatering is complete. Trouble has been experienced in obtaining the brinks necessary to complete the re-erection of the boiler, but these are now in hand and the job should be complete in a week or so. Messrs Allen and party have succeeded in opening the coke ovens in the old Brunner mine, and the familiar sight of the fires burning again in these ovens is appreciated. They are producing excellent coke, and it is commanding a very ready sale. It only wants some enterprising person to start the brick works again to make Brunner bricks again famous. The re-erection of the Brunner traffic bridge is proceeding under the able guidance of Mr Sigley. Already two anchorages are complete, but it is estimated the job will last another 18 months. Messrs Buchanan and Keenan have made good progress with the Stillwater Creek bridge and expect to have it completed by the end of the present month.
