Mr , 1’ air is regarded as particularly sound on linance. Messrs J. H. Enright, DeputyMayor, and P. B. Paynw, chairman of tlie Works Committee, did not again nominate. -Both have done very good work on the Council. Their places . were taken by Mr S.. Jenkins, who served a previous term oh the Council, and Mr it. A. Sutherland. _ The Hospital Board found live nominations for three seats, thus' ensuring an election. Mr blee, chairman, decided not to take office again. The live nominations are : Messrs C. N. .Greenland and VV. Caldwell (retiring mem. beis), E, R. Eox (a member 'on a former occasion.). Rev. A. Miller, who accepts nomination for the first time, and Mrs R. Patterson, who previously served on the Board. It is generally accepted that Messrs Greenland and Caldwell will be re-elqcted, but who is to fill third position is hard to say. It may be the lady candidate, but her chances of return may be prejudiced to some extent by the fact that her husband is already a member of the Board, as one of the representatives of the County. Mrs Q. Broad, who has been severely stricken of late, lost on Friday -her 'four-year-old daughter, who died in the district hospital from Spinal meningitis. 'Hey husband and two members of the family have died in a brief space of time. • Hany Moody, ( who collapsed and died while serving in Mr Hawkin’s shop at Ngakawau on Thursday, was buried in tne Seddonville cemetery on Saturday, the Rev. NtJigan, of Granity, impressively conducting the last sad rites. No football matches were played on Ajjzad Day, but yesterday quite a number of fixtures were got off in the country. Rovers ' defeated Westport Seniors by .23pts to nil. In junior games, Denniston defeated Westport by 5 to nil, Mokihinui defeated Stars by 16 to 6 and United defeated Rivals by 8 to 6, while Westport Thirds were defeated by Denniston by lOpts to 3. charge of theft of a jersey and was acquitted, Sinclair, the owner of the jersey, stating that he lent it to Schaddick to go to a dance. This case arose out of a happening at the Westport race meeting. Yesterday was prize-giving day at the Sunday schools, being the first day of assembling since the schools closed 1 for the summer vacation. Over £lO 1 worth of prizes were distributed at St. a John’s Sunday School by the Rev. J. .A. Jermyns. The prizes at the Methodist Sunday School were distributed ■ by Mrs H. P. Lawry. The Westport Coal Company’s out- ■ put last week was 5950 tons 17cwt, the Stockton Company’s output being 2521 * tons u Bcwt. A fire, fortunately caugh’t in its incipient stage, occurred at the residence ' of Mr J. Freeman, yesterday at 12.10 ' p.m. It was extinguished by Mr and • Mrs Freeman and neighbours just as the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene. ! Mt Freeman had £250 insurance on ■ the house, but no insurance oh the ’ furniture. Mr Allan Larsen, son of Mr and Mrs J. Larsen, broke a collarbone while playing football on Friday afternoon in the Technical High School practice. Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., holds court , at Westport to-day, at MurchiSbn tomorrow, and then proceeds down the Coast. Mrs Smyth and her sister,. Miss McColl, left by the Komata for Wellington, the former on a visit to her people. The Rev. Poole, of Granity, having received word that his wife is seriously, ill, left by the Komata on Friday' evening en route to Hawkes Bay.
