COBDEN NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). Matters have almost reached normal again after the holidays. Visitors to fotner parts are gradually returning and fyiends who spent their holidays here have nearly, all returned to their homes. The present long spell of dry weather has caused a 'water famine. The great majority of pur residents depend on tanks for water and every evening baths, buckets' and tins are being requisitioned to carry supplies from the nearest creek. The weather, too, combined with an increased motor traffic, has affected the main road. At present the Town Board staff is busily engaged gravelling and repairing the worst parts. One result of the dry hot spell is that the various swimming places are being exceptionally well patronised. From early morning to dusk hundreds of children and adults may be seen swimming and splashing on the various shingle banks on this side.. Several good catches of schnapper are reported recently, both from the tiphead ans also from the river-mouth. Yesterday at least five good-sized specimens were landed in less than two hours. Mr M. Rea is making splendid pro-
gress with his contract for the levellin*. of the school ground. A big improve inent is already noticeable, and finished the playing area will not onlj be larger but also much drier. lie School Committee met last evening and discussed plans for future operations. It was decided to hold a flower show on February 23, and subcommittees were set up to make tlie necessary arrangements for the various sections. Considerable enthusiasm was evinced, and with the present good season a very fine show should result. The annual district picnic has been fixed for February 7 at Omoto. School children will be carried free, while the fare for adults will be one shilling. An ample supply of'fruit, lollies, lea and sugar has been arranged.for, and given a fine day the 1925 picnic promises to be even a greater success than those of previous years.
