It was an off morning at Trentham, as practically every horse out only trotted or cantered on the tan track. Salamis and Pantrymaid, who sprinted three furlongs in 37 l-ssecs., were the only ones to gallop fast, Musketoon and Lady Ridicule, both looking well, were cantered twice around.

RACING NEWS AND NOTES.

(By “Arlington.”)

Sir George Clifford has sold the three-year-old Hungry Hill, by Bezonian—Heather brae, to a Wairarapa sportsman. At the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Wednesday, an investigation was held into the first day’s timing, and it was decided that all the first day’s times should be reduced at the rate of four-fifths of a second to the mile.

The history attaching to at least one of the hurdle races during the recent West Coast meetings is a topic of conversation in sporting circles in the North Island at present, and recalls the old saying that even the best laid schemes of men and mice oft ’gang astrav.

Judged by their Spring form on the same course, there should not be much between Gold Light and Musketoon at the finish of the Wellington Cup. Musketoon 8-8 beat Gold Light 9.9 by a head in the Wellington Handicap, and 'now, with a furlong further, to travel, Gold Light meets the imported horse on a pound worse terms. These figures seem to favour Musketoon.

Sunart, Gold Light and Musketoon, who filled the places in the New Zealand Cup can fight their Riccarton battle over again in the Wellington Cup next week. Musketoon has a big pull in the weights as he meets Sunart

on 161 b. and Gold Light on, 111 b. bettei terms. Gaillard and. Motley , representing the three-year-olds, will have strong opposition in the Wellington Stakes on Tuesday next from Runnymede, Gyrene, Shirley, and Lady Cavendish. Tlu last four have all. earned penalties Lady Cavendish and Runnymede oi 141 b.. Cyrene of 101 b., and Shirley ol 51b. ' These bring them fairly close ti the three-year-olds in the weights, bul unless Motley really comes back to hei two-year-old form, she does not appeal to have a chance of beating Runnymede for one. Master Sandstone and Merit have been responsible for some really good track work at Trentham during the past week, and both of them should win during course of the meeting. Tinohari is a greatly improved mare, and “the heads” are all picking her to win a race next Tuesday. Audo Bell, a four-year-old gelding bj Great Audubon from Annie Bells McKinney, dam of Peter McKinney, was seen in a favourable light in the East bourne Handicap at Wellington on Wednesday. He began smartly and leading throughout won without being extended. Billy Sea was in ,a more generous mood than in the Gold Cup on the opening day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, when he stood on the mark. Beginning smartly in the Bollard Handicap he easily disposed of the eight others, and returned a good two(figure dividend. He was imported from Australia last year, and this was his first win in the Dominion. Dreamalion and Rosie Nut were always well placed, but had no chance of beating the'winner. Brutus went a solid race, but was not good enough. Audacious and Holly Bov were sore and failed to show up, while Talent, Van Cap and Olive Huon ran very badly.
