In the cricket, match, Champion County versus the: Rest of England, at the Oval, Yorkshire made 16 f (Holmes 62). Tate took 4 for 48 and Douglas 3 for 12. The ’Rest scored 165 for 2.‘ (Hobbs 40, Sandham 45).
S. AFRICANS LOSE.
LONDON, Sept. 12.
The South Africans’ second innings against Thornton’s Eleven realised 273 runs. They wore beaten by an innings and 45 runs. AN AMERICAN TOUR. YORK, September 13. At Brooklyn, the two days’ match, English Incognito cricketers versus New York Eleven resulted in a draw, the Incognito scoring a total of 234 runs against 296. The Britishers, after batting until five o’clock for a total of 153 for six 'wickets declared the second innings closed. The New Yorkers made sixty-three for the loss of five wickets, or twenty below the total required to win. GILLIGAN INTERVIEWED. LONDON, September 14. Speaking in connection with the departure of the cricket team' for Australia, Gilligan said that as far as lay in his power, there would be' no unpleasant incidents, and no- cabling or articles by members of the team. Tire team would give Australia a good game ; whether it would be beaten or not was another question.
