NORTH ISLAND WIN.
(Per Press Association.)
NELSON, September 9. The North v. South Island Hockey match was played this, afternoon, and it resulted ill, very fine display $ hockey, arousing a. large crowd of spectators to a high degree of enthusiasm. Although the teams had not played together before, splendid combined movements among the forwards and heady play by the backs, made the game of 1 the utmost interest, and a splendid example of dogged determination on the. part of each side to win. The result was three goals to two in favour of the Northerners, but, with just a trifle of luck in the last quarter of an hour, in which the South Island domiriated the game, a draw would have about indicated the respective 'merits of the teams. A few minutes after the start, Miss Hei took the ball to the S»uth circle, where, after her shot had been saved, the goalkeeper, Miss Hill, put it through off a .rebound. | North continued, still ' attacking. Good work by Miss Burt (full back) relieved 4 the South, and then Miss H. Horner cleverly sent it to the circle, allowing Miss Maude to ■equalise. The Northerners regained the lead, Miss Hei* coming through and goaling after a good individual effort. ' Before the end of the spell both attacked, and another goal gave th® North Island the lead by three goals to one. The second half saw clever play by both forward divisions, and neither side could claim much advantage, until well through the spell,. when the South Island set up persistent attacks, which looked like culminating in a score at any moment. Eventually, Miss Horner beat the goalkeeper, after the latter had twice cleared. The closing 'stages were very exciting, as the South made desperate attempts to sco|’e, which repeatedly were frustrated ; but the whistle sounded with the advantage with the North.
For the winners, Miss -Hei was an outstanding forward. Misses Hill and Newey, and Mrs MacDonald were also prominent. Of the South team, Miss Burt was the mainstay among the backs, and Misses Clarke, Ashley and Homer were the best forwards. A Mr S. Kirkpatrick (president of the local association) donated four hockey sticks for the best back and forward players in each team. These were won by Mrs MacDonald (Auckland) and Miss Hei? (Poverty. Bay), and Misses Burt and Clarke (Southland).
