NELSON TOURNAMENT RESULTS.

(.Per Press Association.j

NELSON, September 5.

The Ladies’ Championship Hockey Tournament was continued, this aiternoon, four games being played. A ciianga in uie weather conditions set in at an early hour this morning, snowei’s failing until midday, wnen it cleared, and tne matches were got off m nne weather. The ground was on tne slippery side, but the rain had the .eflect ui taking off the hardness, which has been responsible for a number of casualties.

In Section A, Marlborough had no chance against Wairarapa, but in the B Section better hockey was shown Hawke’s Bay were never extended against Buller, but both Southland — Auckland, and Ruahine (Dannevirke)Manawatu games were fast and exciting contests. The result makes it almost certain that Ruahine and Southland will have to play off for the section winner, as Southland should have no difficulty in disposing of Manawatu on Monday. The play in the Southland —Auckland game;w:is marked by very fine work by the Southland forwards, who were more' than a match for their opponents,. who were also up against a very solid half line. The first speli ended one all, and immediately on resuming. Southland rushed play to the centre and gained the lead. Tn ihe latter.half of the spell, Auckland worked better together, and just missed scoring by the nearest chance once or twico. The result was put beyond doubt by Southland getting a third goal within ten minutes of time. Marawatu held off the strong Ruahine attacks in the first spell, and they also had several chances of netting. Quick, open’ play characterised the game in which Ruahine were better in the circle and, and they passed wir,h more judgment. With only a lead of one goal in the first half, it was anybody’s game until well on in the second half, when Ruahine broke down the other’s stubborn defence and netted twice. A ball was held last night for the visiting players, and it was very largely attended* and proved a great success. The result of to-day’s games were • - A Section —-Wairarapa beat Marlborough by ten to nil. B Section —Hawke's Bay seven, beat Buller two. Ruahine three beat Manawatu nil. Southland three beat Auckland one.
