DUNOLLIE FATALITY
CO-OPERATIVE MINER KILLED. THROUGH FALL OF STONE. Buried in two falls of stone, Albert Manderson, a member of Manderson and Party’s co-operative coal-mining venture at Dunollie, was killed between 3 and 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
The mine in which he was working in an old State mine, and is worked by a party of eight. Yesterday the party was engaged in re-timbering work at the face of the coal. At about 2.30 the deceased had put up a set, when in some manner one of the legs of the set became dislodgeci, throwing the strain on the other legs, which collapsed. A large quantity of stone and other debris fell and practically buried Manderson. Other members of the party promptly came to Manderson’s assistance ana started to extricate him. Manderson himself was able to talk and even lend a hand when his arms were freed. The workers were in high hopes of getting the unfortunate man free when another large fall of debris buried him completely. The work of half-an. hour had gone for nothing but the men depserately renewed their efforts. It was another half-hour before the stone was cleared, and the men themselves were constantly in danger of being sturck by further dislodgenlents of stone. Manderson, however, had evidently died of suffocation, as a subsequent examination of the body by Dr Bruce Roy revealed few marks of bodily injuries. The body was taken to deceased’s home, and an inquest will be held on Monday. Social functions arranged to take place at Runanga last evening were cancelled out of respect to the memory of deceased. The late Mr Manderson was well known in Runanga, and was a prominent supporter of Rugby League. His parents and brothers reside in the district, and he leaves a young widow and'a son 18 months old. Mrs Manderso was formerly Miss Naisbitt. The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon.
