PROHIBITION ISSUE
IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ■, WASHINGTON, April 28Great interest and surprise has been aroused by Representative Upshaw’s announcement that he will be a candidate for nomination for the Vice Presidency at the Democratic Party National Convention on June 26. Mr Upshaw, who is the strongest advocate of prohibition in Congress, and possibly throughout the United States, will have the support universally of the prohibitionists irrespective of party, and friends and he can capture nomination regardless of who is nominated for the Presidency. Governor Smith, of New York, who will be a leading aspirant for the Democratic presidential nomination, is an avowed wet. Mr Upshaw’s announcement indicates a stormy session at the National Convention, and the. possibility that the coming, campaign will be fought with prohibition as a major issue. This would possibly be welcomed by certain elements of both parties, who fear the consequences of the oil scandal issue. Both parties so far, however have shunned the prohibition issue, declaring it is a law which must be enforced. f
