MISSING SHIPS

O—ENGINEER’S MISGIVINGS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) LONDON, September 19. The Board of Trade has opened an inquiry concerning the steamer El Kahira, which mysteriously disappeared on a voyage in the Mediterranean in July, 1922, with all hands. No wreckage was found. Bevan, the chief engineer, gave evidence that he left the boat after three days, because he was not satisfied with the condition of the ship, or the way in which the cargo was being stowed. He pointed out the deficiencies to the captain, who shrugged his shoulders Witness telegraphed his resignation to the owners, and left the ship without waiting for a reply. The vessel had no wireless. The captain’s widow gave evidence that she had received a letter from her husband, by a pilot boat, saying that there had been engine trouble, and everything seemed to be going wrong. STRUCK AN ICEBERG ? CAPETOWN, September 18. The Nestor reports that wireless signals have elicited no reply from the missing steamer Baron Blantyre. Maritime opinion in Durban favours the theory that she struck an iceberg.
