OUR CANTERBURY NOTES. CUP FAVOURITES. (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, January 31. Aliurir il as been scratched for the Juvenile Handicap at the Metropolitan I rotting Club’s February meeting. The West Coast-owned pacer Lord Lytton was a visitor at Addington today, and was given useful exercise oy H. Gaskill, who has secured a lease of the half-brother to Willie Lincoln. Star Queen and Loganwood are the ruling favourites for the Dunedin Cup. Hie former will be driven by A. Hendricksen and the latter by S. Smith. Gleaming is being kept in steady work at New Brighton, but- it is doubtful if he will stand a. preparation as he is far from sound. Here is another story from (he racecourse. An Auckland business man, hard-headed and keen, decided io motor sonic <>| his clients out to the races. He was anxious, however, io bring them back early, and in order to avoid tiie difficulty of getting out of the traffic near the course it was suggested that the car should he taken Io the home o| one of his friends not far oh. 'I he party accordingly went there. \s the parly reached t| lP iioij-e, hoiif-bodv looking at it. remarked “No. 1.7.” This was merely

the number of the dwelling, but what must the business man and all his clients do but accept it as an omen for the next race). So they all hurried on foot to the course. But as they proceeded, our hard-headed and keen business man spotted a soiled playing cari lying on the ground. He. pounced upon it and discovered it was the Nine of Spades. This was undoubtedly another tip ! Accordingly the party went up to the “tote” and each put £1 on No. 17. They had never heard of the horse which bore this number, and they will probably never hear of it again, but it walked home and paid a dividend of £27. Then the old placing card was again examined, and once more they trooped up to the machine. ‘No. Nine, one,” demanded each, and each got one on No. Nine, which in due course passed the post first and paid the fairly respectable dividend of £3 odd.
