(Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 1. A conference of local bodies took place at the Town Hall last night, to discuss various local requirements. The Mayor (Mr G. Perry) presided. The following resolutions were carried: — (1) Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Mr D. J. Evans: That the Confer, ence learns with pleasure and gratification of the enterprise of the South Westland settlers to assist themselves by securing a boat to render improved service to the settlements, and that the project be supported by all willing to help in the desire to see the remoter parts of South Westland brought into closer touch with the available markets for pastoral and dairying products. (2) Proposed by County Chairman (Mr W. Jeffries) seconded by Mr Evans:--That the Conference suggests to the Borough Council to consider ways and means for asphalting a considerable section of Revell Street, thereby improving the road for traffic, and minimising the dust and other nuisances arising from the present state of the principal thoroughfare. (3) Proposed by Mr W. J. Butler, seconded by Mi: A. Parkhill : —That the Conference joins in the desire to see traffic operating through Arthur’s Pass tunnel at the earliest possible date, and to this end suggests that the Progress League arrange for a representative to be stationed at Otira to supply authentic weekly reports as to the progress of the works and offer suggestions as to how completion may be speeded up. (4) Proposed by Mi: J). J. Evans, seconded by Mr F. McGregor: —That the Conference while appreciating what has been done in a preliminary way in attending to the drainage of the swamp lands of Westland, urges that the actual works recommended should be put in hand as soon as possible, and that where private enterprise can be assisted by road and other main drainages, the Department be urged to cooperate on reasonable lines. (5) Proposed by the County Chairman, seconded by Mr H. M. Coulson, that the Conference having heard the report in respect to the preliminary arrangements for the proposed Jubilee Exhibition at December-January, and noted the wide and varied applications already being made for space, desires the Executive to proceed with the project on the lines proposed, and inter alia take the necessary steps in asking Government to pass the legislation required to give local bodies full power to co-operate in regard to the event; as also in respect to the celebration of the diamond jubilee of the province of West land at the same time.

(6) Proposed by Air D. J. Evans, seconded by Mr W. J. Butler: — I hat the Conference approves the publicity campaign proposed in regard to AVcst- ■■ iiid, and that steps he taken to sustain the campaign to cover an all the

(7) Proposed by Mr Coulson, seconded by Air Jeffries that the Conference urges upon the Pubilc Works Department to reinstate upon the Estimates a sufficient sum to complete the road connecting Takutai and Ruatapu.
