A REBEL EXPLOIT.

LONDON, December 12. One hundred rebels rushed the National Army Barracks at Carrich-on-Suir, and took prisoner the garrison. Then they rounded up thirty members of the National Army in the streets and kinemas. The rebels, however, released the National troops after setting fire to the barracks, the hospital, and the post office. Later, when National reinforcements arrived, they were fired on from a hill. Mr. Martin Fitzgerald, the proprietor of the Dublin “Freeman’s Jour nal,” whom the Republicans ordered t > leave Ireland under a threat of death, will defy the rebels, and has refused to leave Ireland. REPLY TO PREMIER SMUTS. CAPETOWN, December 12. President Cosgrave. replying to Pre mier Smuts’s message of congratulation says: We thoroughly appreciate your personal share in bringing about this great act of justice and heartily join in the hope that the emergence of Ireland as a free nation in the Commonwealth group may lead to the strengthening of the spiritual bond uniting the nations which compose itTHE POPE’S MESSAGE. LONDON, December 12. The Pope has sent a message to My Tim Healey cordially welcoming his appointment. The Pope adds that ho prays a happy era of peace and prosperity has now set in for his beloved people of Ireland. He sends his Apostolic blessing.
