At the Federal Fanners’ Conference, Mr Roberts (a member of the Queensland Assembly) said that he knew of one man who had ordered that 2000 of his cows should be shot before June if there was no rain, and 2000 more before August, so as to avoid paying taxation on them. Mr Fleming (a member of the Federal House of Representatives) testified that the same thing was prevalent throughout Australia. He added that Mr Hughes had stumped the Commonwealth urging greater production, and that was the farmers’ reward for it.
