HOKITIKA

(Own Correspondent.)

HOKITIKA, June 16,

The sawmilling industry is again suffering through lack of orders. Several mills have temporarily ceased cutting. Perry and Co. closed down for the first time in 30 years and Stuart and Chapman the first for 20 years. However, the management are endeavouring to keep some men employed in various works round the mills. It is expected that the slackness will be of short duration.

Building is steadily going on. House property still sells well, as evidenced by the sale of Mr D. Diedrich’s house in Upper Hampden Street. A house that is at all habitable is generally bespoke some time before it is vacated.

Mr S. W. Ford (engineer in charge of the Rimu dredge) with his wife and child, intends leaving in a day or two on a visit to San Francisco, his home. He expects to return about September.

It is often said that this place has a multiplicity of local bodies, but the latest edition—the Beautifying Association—certainly warrants its existence, and it came into being none too soon. Its work is already manifesting itself in the great improvements effected.
