ATTACK ON MANAGER.

(Per Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, June 15.

The premises of the Bank of New Zealand were entered last night during tl.e temporary absence of r the manager, Mr W. (G. Mann, who sleeps above the office. When the manager returned about 11.52 p.m. his efforts to open the front door were resisted by an intruder, who struck Mann a severe blow on the forehead with a weapon afterwards found on the footpath and identified as a plumber’s Lead beater. Mann’s call for assistance was heard by the constable at the Post Office a short distance away and the latter hurried to the bank, but the burglar had then disappeared up a right-of-way.

An examination of the premises showed that a small sum in loose cash had been taken from some clothes hanging in the manager’s room. Otherwise everything was in order. Mr Mann had to receive medical attention.
