OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM A. MEATES. The death took place yesterday morning of Mr William Anthony Meates, after a lengthy illness. Deceased was 64 yeais of age, and a native 01 Birchfield, Victoria. At the age of six years he arrived at Greymouth with his parents, who were well-known residents in the early days, his father, the late Mr William Meates, being messenger to the Bank of New Zealand. Deceased over forty years ago was employed at a storeman by Duncan McLean and Co., Greymouth, and later kept a store at Waiuta. Becoming interested in gold-mining, Mr Meates was well-known as a prospector, and in 1968 he discovered what is now the site of the Blackwater Mine. During the past seven or eight years, deceased has resided at Greymouth with his wife (who was a Miss Flaherty, of Kumara) and family. He was one of the founders of the Greymouth Old Boys Association, and at his death was piesident, a position he held lor several years. He was for some years a vice-president of the Greymouth Waterside Workers Union, and was also a vice-president and meinbei of the executive of St. Columba Club. He leaves a widow, a daughter (Miss Mary Meates) and four sons: William (Moana), John (Railway Department, Greymouth), Frank (Post Office, Blackball) and Vincent (St. Bede’s College, Christchurch). The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving St. Patrick’s Church at 11 a.m. for the G revmouth Cemetery.
