— : SEVEN ASIDE TOURNEY.
Signs of rain and a cold, biting wind did not deter a large crowd from attending the Rugby seven-asidt, tournament at Victoria Park on Saturday last. The games were all brisk and spectacular and occupied a good part of the afternoon The United Club was successful in accomplishing the hat trick, securing the lead in senior, junior and fourth grade contests. Their victory is one worthy of congratulanot particularly brilliant, but the junior themselves —anticipated a win over Stars. The Star teams were in good fettle, and it is hard to explain how they missed the championship. The Marist Seniors were the deciding game. Tielfer and Nightingale team played very well indeed and was unfortunate in not faring better.
RESULTS: Senior:—Star A (18) beat Marist (3). Steel, Mosley and Ring scored for Star, Nelson and Mclntosh converting. O’Hallahan scored for Marist. United (8) beat Star B (3). Winchester and Jones scored for United, Wallace converting. Star’s score was registered by Wallace.
United (10) beat Star A (8). This was the deciding game. Tielfer and Nightingale scored for United and Steel for Star. Junior: United A (21) beat Lake Brunner A (nil). McKay, Richmond and Fairhall scored, Warnes converting twice and Jamieson once. Marist (6) beat Cobden (3). James and Kennedy scored for Marist and Oliver for Cobden, in the second half. United B (6) beat Lake Brunner B (3.— Dewar and Buck registered scores for United and Leathern scored for Brunner. United A (22) beat Star (nil) .-The scores for United were made by Jamieson, Fairhall, Richmond and Jones, Warnes and Reynolds converting. Marist (6) v. United B (3). Quinn and Jackson scored for Marist and Burrows for United. . United A (16) v. Marist (5). The final game was good and fast. Fairhall scored two tries and Warnes and McKay scored also. Jackson scored brilliantly for Marist and converted.
Fourth Grade results were :— D.H.S. A 9, United B 3. Marist 5, Star 0. United A 8, Cobden 0. Marist 11, D.H.S. A 3. United A 8, Marist 5. SCHOOLS: D H S. A 25, Marist B 0. Marist AH, D.H.S. B 0. A 6, Kumara 3. D.H.S. A 3, Marist A 0. Messrs Beaumont, Fass, Sherlock and McGrath acted as referees, and were kept very active. They all acquitted themselves to the satisfaction of players and spectators. ROTOMANU v. BELL HILT,. At Te K’nca on the week-end Roto marn mot a fi am from the newly-form-■v. nlr coiifcsfid name ended in a draw, throe ill. For Rotomanu Herring kicked a troal and Tweedie scored an unconverted try for Bell Hill. RUGBY' LEAGUE.
The League games throughout the week end were all of an inte”esting character and attracted cood attendances. The games at the Recreation Ground were particularly good, and the snectators enjoyed every part of the respective games. Results are as follow :— SENIOR. Kohinoor (5) beat Blackball (5). Runanga (18) beat Waiuta (14). JUNIOR. Rival (17) beat Roa (7). Runanga (14) beat Brunner (0). Blackball (10) beat Kohinoor (0). Blackball (20) beat Runanga (0).
FOURTH GRADE. Runanga (10) beat Blackball (6). SOCCER. TOWN v. COUNTRY. An interesting game was played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday between Town and Country, which proved popular. This was the iirst opportunity town residents had been afforded of witnessing the Soccer game, and hopes were expressed that more matches would be played in future. The town men beat the country l>y one point after a good tussle, the game resulting: Town 3 and Country 2. Mr H. McKeowen was the referee.
COAST REPS. On Saturday evening the Westland selectors, Messrs Hunter, Kitchel, McKeov.en and Bennett, selected the Westiiiuii cep. team to play Australia at Victoria Park on Wednesday:—Goal, Bennett (Greymouth); right back, Hogg (Moonlight) ; left back, Penman (Blackball); right half, Henderson (G); centre half, Sharp (G); left half, Kinsey (Runanga); right wing, F. Clark (B.) ; C. Quibell (M.); centre, Grey (R.); left wing, Howie (G.) and J. McNicol sen. (M). Reserves— Goal, Wilson (B.) ; backs, Richmond (R.), Jolly (B.); half-back, W. Balderstone (B.); forwards, J. Kerr (B.); Peterson (R.) and Hampson (M). The sports loving public of Greymouth have a treat in store for them when the Australian “Soccer” team will visit Greymouth. The team will arrive by next Tuesday evening’s express, when they will be received by the local executive and formally welcomed to the town by the Mayor from the balcony of the Albion Hotel, which will be the headquarters during their stay. The team’s'colours are blue, with white knickers, blue hose with maroon tops and the jerseys have “A” badge with the kangaroo arid wattle. The average weight of the team is about 1(M. Cartwright list 41b and Mcßride list 31b are the heaviest. Dane outside ? —V. ■
right is just under 9st and rather on the small side at that. They are a young lot of players too, only a couple being over 30 years of age/ F. Thompson, a very clever outside right, will not reach 19 for another three months, so he'gets his cap at an early age. The Municipal Band has consented to play the team upon arrival to the Albion Hotel, and the Runanga Band will play selections during the match in the afternoon. The Secretary of the Point Elizabeth and Liverpool State Collieries Employees has written that it was unanimously de : cided to co-operate in observing June 7 as a public holiday in lieu of June 3.
SOUTH ISLAND TEAM. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 5. The Association football South Island team to meet Australia at Lancaster 1 aik on Saturday will be:—Goal, N. Wilson (Canterbury); backs, W. Mitchell (Canterbury and H. McAuley (Otago); half-backs W. Boull (Canterbury), J. Race (Otago) and J. Simpson (Canterbury); forwards: W. Brundell (Otago), A. Bisset (Canterbury), H. Munsie (Otago), E. J. Norman (Canterbury) and J”. Rarity (Otago). Reserves: P. Dowker, L. Barwell, J. Hales (Canterbury). Canterbury may lose one representative in favour of a West Coast player.
