SURF CLUB MEMBERS
CENSURED BY ASSOCIATION. (Per Press Association.) CTIRISTCHFRCH. Alarch 25? The action of three members of the New Bright.m Surf ( hit in refusing to compete as members of the Canterbury representative team for the Nelson Shield live-saving contest at the New Zealand championship meeting al Wellington last mom!) provoked a, lisely discussion at- a meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association. 1 lie members concerned had been selected lor the Canterbury team, but instead represented their own chib at the contest and New Brighton won the Shield. The three members in correspomndence gave the reason for their action. During the course of a long discus.-ion they emphasised that a. principle was at stake, in that, in sport it was recognised that when a person was selected to represent- a province he must do so unless he had a sound reason for refusing. A iesolution was passed: ‘‘that the Association does nut consider the explanation offered by the three members satisfactory from a surfing standpoint to the Association, and that they be censured for their action.” An amendment : ‘‘That the members be suspended from the date of the offence,” was defeated; also a second amendment : ‘‘That the Association viewed with displeasure the action of the three members and expressed regret for the lateness in the selection of the Canterbury team.” Before the motion was put the New Brighton delegates withdrew from the meeting.
