The operator on the ' Mai hemo, which arrived from San Fnancicso on Sunday heard wireless telephone messages from Melbourne when 2308 miles distant. He heard the voiceplainly despite the fact that twenty stations and vessels were' heard at the same time. A FATAL FALL. ■WELLINGTON, March 13. ■William Alexander Ferguson, 36, a fireman, fell from the third story window of a. boardinghouse late last night. He died in the hospital at 4.30 this morning. Deceased was single and a native of Scotland. MEAT POOL BOARD. ■WELLINGTON, March 12. Mr. Massey, interviewed, on his return from the North, said he had nothing further io say at present as to the appointment of Mr. AN. D. Hunt, as representative of the stock and station agents on the Meat Pool Board. STUDENT BURG 1 -AR’S ESCAL’K. ■WELLINGTON. March 13. A daring and seemingly -ngenius escape from gaol was accomplished yesterday morning by Charles Campbell Terrace Gaol. His freedom was brief, however, for lie had the ill-luck to run into a prison warder who was just coming on duty. Dawkins was promptly detained and taken back to gaol, after being away only about ten minutes., STRANDED VALAIAII lE. I’ICTON, Al arch 12. Owing to heavy surf in the \ minify of the stranded schooner A almarie, the scow Kohi, which attempted to salvage her timber cargo, was unable to get within a mile of the beach on Thursday. Therefore the project of salvaging the cargo was abandoned. It is now suggested to land the timber and carry it across the Spit by a tramway temporarily constructed. LAND PURCHASE BOARDS. Otago.—James Smith (Greenfield), Major Joint McCrae, D.S.O. (Dunedin). MOTOR LORRIES COLLIDE. WELLINGTON, March 12. Whilst proceeding to Soke’s N alley this morning in a motor lorry a blackberrying party collided with another lorry, both of which were smashed. A boy named Edward Bowers, aged 11, residing at Brooklyn had both legs broken. A woman, named Jones, of Harland Street, had her hand severely injured. Airs. Bowerscombe, of 10 Mortimer Terrace, Mitchelltown, had several ribs broken. The boy W’as removed to the Trent ham Hospital, where an operation was performed. Mrs. Jones and Airs Bowerscombe were conveyed to Wellington hospital. SHEEP-STEALING’. WANGANUI, Alarc.lt 10. In the Supreme Court this morning, Alatthew Al.ulcahy, who had pleaded guilty in the lower Court to a charge of sheep-stealing, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. His partner, David Hyde, was admitted to probation for twelve months. Counsel for the accused stated that Alulcahy refused to disclose the name of the person from.whom he bought the sheep, ing that he had given his oath and word of honour not to divulge the name. It was, he said, more than his word of honour, religious element entering largely into the matter.
