SCHOOL COMMITTEE
. ■— FRICTION WITH MINISTER. (Speical to Star.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 10. The Minister for Education is coming in for some hard knocks by members of the school committee in Timaru. At the present time', there are three schools in Timarti which are hopelessly overcrowded. To one of these the Minister gave a grant of £4OOO for additional accommodation, and it is now all right, bu the other two consider that they are just as much entitled to a grant, and are making their opinions known in no uncertain way. At a. meeting of the main school committee the following motion was passed : That we entirely disapprove of the Minister’s reply to our request for the enlargement of the Timaru West school, after presenting to the Department statistics absolutely beyond dispute in support of our application. Wo resent the remark in the Ministers’ . telegram characterising our requests as unreasonable. Mr. Holdgatc in seconding the motion said that one would think from j the Minister's reply that the committee were a lot of brainless idiots. The Minister’s telegram was nothing short - of an insult, and he resented it strongly, the committee gave their time in order to do the best they could for the < children, and such treatment as they > were receiving from the Minister was ;
...... — „ K .... poor compensation, ami absolutely nc encouragement. It did not reflect much credit on the Alinister that hr should on one hand give every assistance to Dr. Truby King to promote the health of children, and yet permit such conditions to exist a” obtained at Timaru West and Waimataitai.
