FIRES AT FOXTON.
FOXTON, Alarch 9.
A six roomed house and contents, in Patrick Street, owned and occupied by J. Purcell, was totally destroyed by fire. The cause of the outbreak is thought to be a defective chimney. This is the third. outbreak since Sunday. The other two outbreaks were a__t,wo-roomed' cotttage and a lean-to store at the seaside. GIRI. SENTENCED. _ CHRISTCHURCH, Alarch 9. At the Supreme Court to-day, Edna Alma Hunt, .18, domestic servant, was sentenced by Air. Justice. Adams to three months’ imprisonment tor arson and two charges .of housebreaking and theft at Temuka. His Honour recommended that prisoner bo committed to an industrial school and immediately examined in order to ascertain the extent of her mental weakness.' BOARDING HOUSE ABLAZE TTAIARU, March 9. Early this morning, the fire brigade was called to A\ ai-iti Road where Holm wood Hpuse. owned by E. R. Guinness, and occupied by Airs. Lord as a boarding house, was found in Hames. The brigade worked for two and a-half hours before the Haines were extinguished hut not before extensive. damage had been done. 1 l' c fire evidently startci in the kitchen, but the origin is a mystery. All Vlie inmates escaped safely. The builcling contained twelve rooms and was an oh I wooden structure. ARRESTS FOLLOW FIRE. NELSON, March 9. Following the fire at Louissons Ltd. on Alonday it was reported to the police that ‘sealskin coats had been stolen. Some of the missing goods were' found in an outhouse at Hie Alasonic Hotel. Further search and observation by police resulted in tho discovery of other coats, and also a clue which led to the_ arrest of AVilliam Balfour J li• _aged a cook at the Al’asonic .iiotel, as ho was leaving for Wellington yestei>(*ve. Later, they arrested Ernest Wairau Broad, aged 17, a kitchenman, on the charge of being mplicated. in the theft. Accused were remanded to-dav, till Alonday next. AIR. AIASSEY’S TOULi. O POT IK I, Alarch 9. Air. Alassey arrived at live o’clock yesterday from Gisborne. A Lugo crowd assembled in the afternoon to attend the unveiling ceremony of a monument to fallen soldiers eicctea at a cost of £2,200, bearing over one hundred names. Alany Hora! emblems were received. The returned soldiers and other units paraded, the former providing a firing party. Air. Alasscv in a vigorous speech recalled the heroic deeds of the soldiers and sailors during the wav and said that the same elements were at work to-day that caused the war m 1914. He hoped in years to come that if war came it would imd the Dominion prepared to help and defend the Empire as in the laic war. Air. K. S. Williams, ALP., was amongst the other speakers. The Premier left a( 7 p.m. for Whakatane. Owing to .the shortness of his si ay he was unable to receive any deputations which caused keen disap pointmont.
