. — .. MINISTER AND AMERICANS. 1 hiring the course of hi; speech at Kumara. yesterday, the Minister of Mines (Hon. CL J. Anderson) expressed himself slronglv in favour oi' supporting New Zealand industries. He was referiing to a statement made that the 35 per cent, ad valorem duty on dredging machinery did nut encourage tlm development’- of the mining industry in the Dominion. “With all due deference to America? 1 dredge manufacturers.” said Mr Wilder son, "there are firms in New Zealand who have made splendid dredges up to 50 feet, deep. 'The Government is endeavouring to help ami build tip the engineering industry in the Dominion, with a view to benefiting the miners and everybody else. That is the reason for the imposition of the duly on imported machinery. Supposing New Zealanders" wanted to export machinery to America-. The American tariff would prevent such imports altogether. New Zealand must protect itself. The Americans certainly say that they won the War, but T do not think they did. 'The Americans will nut make a dumping ground of New Zealand so long as I have a vote in it.” (Applause).
