■AJB.. THE NEXT DIRECTOR. MR. .CAUGHLEY’S CAREER, (Special to the Star.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Air. John Caughley, AI.A., who has been appointed Director of Education, is very well-known in Christchurch, where he was for five years headmaster of West Christchurch District High School. He has always taken great interest in educational matters and in the welfare of the schools and teachers. Air. Caughley is a New Zealander, his birthplace being Auckland. He is fifty years of age. After passing through the primary school, he became a pupil teacher at Hastings. He became master of the Napier District ■« i 4- X-TZ" A 11r r\ nl’ n
school, and then went to Kaikoura North, Hawkes Bay. His appointment as head of the secondary department of the Wellington Training College followed and he relinquished that position to became headmaster of West Christchurch District High School. After five years in Christchurch he was appointed assistant Director of Education, and removed to Wellington. Air. Caughley is an AI.A. of Canterbury College, of which institution he was an outside student. He is a keen bowler and is a very familiar figure at the annual tournaments. While in Christchurch Air. Caughley. took a prominent part in the Bible m schools -controversy, and became recognised as the leader of those who opposed the scheme suggested by a laige Wy of ministers of different denominations.
