OBITUARY

MR. WILLIAM DUNN. The death took place at the Westport Hospital yesterday morning of Air. William Dunn, one of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of the Buller district. Air, Dunn, until failing health overtook him, was General Alanager of the Westport Coal Company’s Alillerton collieries, and carried out his duties with signal success, the Company and the men holding him in high esteem. Deceased, who . was 74 years of age, came to New Zealand 41 years ago, from Durham, England. He was at Brunner at the time of the disaster, his eldest son being one of the victims. Later Air. Dunn became underground manager at the mine. Deceased was Alayor of Brunner for two years, Commissioner of the Taylorville school under the Grey Education Board, was a member of the Druids’ Lodge for some forty years, and filled every important public position in the town. commended. In 1897 Air. Dunn went to Denniston as manager of the Cascade t , section of the Westport Coal Company’s Denniston Collieries. Later he took 7 charge of the underground workings at [. the Company’s Alillerton mines. In 1908 f he was promoted to the position of Gene- , ral Alanager of Alillerton mines and held , that position until he retired in • 1916. , Deceased got on well with the men who , had great respect for him.
