NELSON BOARD'S MEETING. WEST COAST BUSINESS. (Own Correspondent.) NELSON, August 30. At the Education Board meeting today, correspondence was received irom the Education Department advising that the Government had agreed to extend the time for granting subsidies for the erection of Honours Boards where claims have not been received but where committees have raised money or have actually committed themselves to liability on the assumption that subsidies would be payable. The Board decided that the Department should either make a substantial improvement in salaries of organ teachers or they should be included to receive a grading increment. The recommendation of the Director of the Westport Technical School regarding an instructor for carpentry classes was adopted. The delay in starting the Technical High School building was fully discussed and referred to the chairman and Mr. Mclntyre to deal with. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. Tomkies to attend the conference of directors and manager of the Board of Technical Schools. The Board decided to purchase a plot of ground at Millerton for agriculture experiments. The architects recommendation regarding Cape Foulwind school building was adopted. The Karamea Committee was authorised to effect minor repairs necessary. The tender of W. Hall for leasing the school reserve at Arapito was accepted. It was resolved that tenders for the erection and alteration of the schools at Mawheraiti, Cronadun and Kopara bo accepted on the Department authorising the necessary grants being made. Concrete tanks were authorised to be erected at Millerton and Gvanity. The question of the installation of electric heating apparatus and acquiring an additional site for a play ground was referred to Mr. Mclntyre. The Inangahua Landing Committee was authorised to submit tenders for the erection of a combined coal and shelter shed. A plan of the site for the proposed new school at Reefton was ordered
to be forwarded to the Education Department, with an explanation. The Board decided to forward a statement of conditions at present existing in the Manna District and ask for permission for the appointment of an itinerant teacher. Fern Flat and Newtown Flat were made half-time schools. The following teachership applications were graded and submitted to tiie various Committees :—Millerton, Head teacher, Mr. Capper; Westport, Assistant primary, Messrs Silcock and "Wills, Miss Solwey ; Millerton. Assistant, Mrs. Diamond (temporary); Waiuta, Assistant, to be offered to ".Miss Sherlock; Wakefield, Assistant, Miss Mediae. Fettali; Tui, sole teacher, .Miss Parkes; Foxhill, Assistant. Miss Holyook (temporary). Sick leave was granted with pay to Miss Morrison, Wakefield; Mus Ryan Inangahua Junction; Miss McKay, Pigeon Valley; Miss Underwood, Foxhill. The following appointments were made: AJiss Horner, second assistant, Richmond; Mr. Carpenter, household teacher, Otaraweo; Miss Sothern, household, Wairangi. The following resignations were accepted : —Miss Widdowsen, junior assistant, Nelson; Miss Torley, second assistant, Millerton ; Miss Stewart, probationer, Black's Point; Miss King Olarowoo; Miss Brewerton, side teacher, Maitai Valley; Miss Brown, household teacher, Wairangi.
