MEMORIAL SATES

SCHEME OUTLINED

FOR GREYMOUTH SCHOOL

WORK TO COMMENCE

To erect ornamental entrance gates at the Greymouth State School to the memory of the late Mr. Talbot and old pupils of the Grey "District High School who fought .did died in the gvat war, was a scheme enthusiastically discussed at last night's meeting of the Grey School Committee.

The chairman state! that he had made inquiries and found that the estimated cost of the gates would be about £l7O, this total comprising the sum of £9O for the ironwork, ,£&0 for the concrete posts and £2O for the marble slabs.

It was the opinion of the meeting that work should bo proceeded with immediately. It was urged that it was a work of a permanent and noble character and one, in the carrying out of which, they could rest assured of public support. The cost was fairly high, for at the present time all material is so dear, but against this expense the committee already held a cheque for £35 which had been forwarded to them for the work by the Caledonian Society. It was resolved that the plans, drawn by ~Mv. Caigou of the Public Works Department, be approved and that the work be carried out as s'>on as possible. The scheme provides for wide entrance gates suitable for motor cars, and smaller gates, one on each ■ side all hung on massive concrete pillars wit! panels of white marble for the inscriptions. Only the names of those who paid the supreme sacrifice will be placed on these tablets. The erection of these massive gates is the initial step towards the replacing of the presnt picket fence, with a concrete foundation and ornamental iron railing along the whole frontage. When the work is carried out the school will not only bo improved in appearance but it will possess a permanent memorial to its noble dead. Hearty votes oF thanks to the C-ile donian Soeietv, the chairman, and Mr Caigou, ended the discussion.
