Mr. R. Alison, manager of the Dobson coal mine, left for Christchurch by this moi'ning's express.
Lieut. Davis, District Instructor in Musketry, who has been on an inspection tour of the West Coast, returned to Christchurch by this morning's express.
Staff Captain Dixon of the Salvation Army, for many years on the Coast, has been appointed Divisional Young People's Secretary for the Christchurch Division. He is expected in Greymoii th on a vis.it next month.
Miss 11. L. Cohen, of Recftqn, who is about to leave for Australia,, was on Thursday evening, at Lcchoro's Restaurant," Reef ton, presented with a well-filled purse Irani the boardcro and management.
The Hon. Mark Cohen, M.L.C., suffering from influenza, is at present an inmate of a private hospital in Christchurch. He was taken ill on his way frqm Wellington to Dunedin.
The death occurred yesterday of Mrs. Hansen, wife of Mr. Peter Hansen, the well-known storekeeper of Woodstock. Deceased had been ailing for some time. She was a native of Manchester, 68 years of age, and leaves a husband "and family of three sons and two daughters. One son was killed during the war.
Mr. A. F. Drayton, who intended being one of the * party from Canterbury which leaves next week to tour the" West Coast, is unable to take that particular trip, having 1* en under the necessity to leave this week on a business visit to the Coast*. He will arrive in Greymouth by the express this evening. .
The following promotions ana »•>- pointments in the Public Trust Office are announced :—Mr. A. Marshall, local deputy-Public Trustee, Whangarei: Mr. R. F. Ward, first assistant local deputy-Public Trustee, Auckland; Mr. E. T. O. Downard, district accountant, Auckland; Mr. P. J. Ryan, district solicitor, Auckland.
Mr. Harpur, eldest son of Mrs. Saunders, of Turuniaha Street, Greymouth is at present in a very indifferent state of health, a result of five years' strenuous service in the Givat War. After spending the last two months at Koroma and Trentham, he has now been transferred to Hanmor Sanatorium. Mr. Harpur recently spent his honeymoon in Greymouth. The best wishes of his numerous friends are expressed for his early restoration to good "health.
Mr. John Bfc.l. whose death oe curred in the Wairau Hospital a
few days ago, was a native of Nelson, where he was born a little years ago. He joined the New Zealand Armed Constabulary at an early atre, and rendered service in the two Maori wars. Later on, he joined the Police Force of which he was a member for some 40 years. For the greaterpart of that period he was stationed in Nelson and on the West Coast, and about 18 vears ago lie was transferr-d to Blenheim, where he was a constable for some nine years then retiring en superannuation.
The Otago Daily Times says : Mr. Theodor? Kins, who wi'l retire from the position of Chief Postmaster on August 31st, is to b" succeeded by Mr. Frederick Chisholm, a native of Wellinqton. Mr. Kiirg has been 45 vears in the service, 43 of which have been spent in Otago and Southland. He joined as a cadet in the Wellington gallery, and was afterwards a cadet at Clinton ; then, in turn, postmaster at Longbush, Alexandra. Gore, and was then appointed an inspector, and his later positions were at Napier, Greymouth, Invercargill, and Dunedtn, it being four years since he came here. He is an officer who knows his duties , thoroughly, and understands the rights of "the public. His successor, Mr. Chisholm, joined the Department at Wansanni 40 years ago. He was in the Wellington' Telegraph C> free for 10 years. For 19 years'be was stationed at Palmerston North, and was superintendent of mails at Auck- , land for six vears, end then went to Wellington as assistant-postmaster. Subsequently ho held the position of senior inspector of the department for the South Island. Be was carrying out similar duties in the North Island when he was appointed acting postmaster at Wellington after the late Mr. A. P. Drvden went on final leave.
