CHILD IN A WELL
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. WOMAN'S BRAVE ACT. SAVES INFANT’S LIFE. (Our Own Correspondent.! HOKITIKA, This Day. A miraculous escape from a watery grave happened yesterday morning to the infant child of Mr and Mrs McKenzie, of Church Stret. The little toddler, who is only eighteen months old, was playing in the yard, in the vicinity of an open and totally unprotected well, into which it suddenly fell. Its cries attracted the attention of the mother, who at once roused the neighbourhood, when assistance was soon at hand. Amongst those who answered the call was Mrs R. Bell, who immediately jumped into the well and rescued the child from its perilous position. When brought to the surface the child was almost lifeless, but by dint of hard and persistent work on the part of those in attendance animation was again restored, and I am pleased to say the little one should be none the worse for its unenviable experience. Too much praise cannot be bestowed on Mrs Bell for her timely act, but for which, I am satisfied, it would have been my sad duty to record another death
