CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Winter Meeting opened to-day in lino weather, but there was a decidedly wintry touch in the air. The track was in better order than anticipated, but it cut up towards the end of the day. Speculation, was brisk, the tote handling £72,844, compared with £55,832 10s on the opening day of last year. Six Cylinder and Wicklow had the finish of the Tally Ho Steeplechase to themselves, in which Six Cylinder won by a nock, with Southerner fifty yards away third. Marchwiel and Micky Doolan fell. Calma and Sami el fell in the Trial Hurdles, Samiel breaking his leg and having to be destroyed. General Retain lost his rider in the Hunters’ Hurdles. Lochella lost his rider in the Grand National Steeplechase, while Master Strowan ran off. Coalition’s time, 7.29 2-5, was the slowest since Phaetontis won in 1903. Lochella’s 7.10 last year is the record for the race. hollowing are the remaining results : ENFIELD STEEPLECHASE, two miles. —Golden Prince (11.9) 1, Bill Terry (10.9) 2, Lawsuit (10.11) 3. Also started —OrmeSby, Bill, John Bunny, Barrister, Sonny, Dunmure and Kintail shire. Won by three lengths. Time 4.11 2-5. Kintailshore and Danilin re ran off, and Barrister fell. Clifford presented H. McSweeney (rider of Coalition)' with a gold mounted whip. Sir George also made a similar presentation to George Young.
