TRIBAL WARS

A column returning from Diwaniyah under General Koningham has reached Jarbuiyah. The Arabs made elaborate arrangements to prevent the column reaching Jarbuiyah but the attack was beaten off by Deccan infantry. The Arabs left seventy dead. The Gurkhas had hand to hand fighting in the palm groves and villages. A final concentration of 2000 tribes with banners flying was successfuly dispersed by gunfire. The total Arab casualties are very heavy, and ours are about twenty.

BRITISH MANDATE.

The first step towards the setting up of national institutions in Mesopotamia in compliance with Great Britain's mandate obligation was taken in Bag-*' dad on August 6th, when nineteen former deputies were summoned from various parts of the country by the present British administration. Their functions will be to frame proposals for provisional electoral law under which members will be elected to the General Assembly which will frame organised law for . the 'country.; This assembly will also provide a source to which the administration may. ..turn for advice connected with'the welfars and future of the country.
