REEFTON NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) PUBLIC MEETING. A meeting was held at. the Council Chambers last evening, when the question of the transference of the centre of the Motueka Licensing district from .Reefton to Motueka was discussed. Mr. E. J. Scantlebury was voted to the chair, and read the advertisement calling the meeting. The chairman explained that Reefton was gazetted the centre, with the clerk of Court, Reefton as clerk, and the Inangahua County Council the controlling body. This had been gazetted, and without any further notice a gazette notice appeared appointing the Clerk of the Court at Motueka as clerk and that district the centre. The Inangahua Council, however, had not been relieved of its liability re providing funds. This was distinctly unfair, as the bulk of the licensed houses were in the Inangahua district. He would move as follows: That this public meeting strong protests' against the action of the Government in removing without notice the licensing centre from Reefton to Motueka, inasmuch as Reefton is the centre of community of interests;, as much the greater number oflicenses are situated within the County of Inangahua. Moreover., uie Magistrate's Court, Reefton, has a permanent office and officials who have in time gone past maintained the licensing registers l and are still capable of doing so. Mr. Phillips seconded the motion-. He thought the district had been badly treated in this respect. The bulk of the business was in the Inangahua district, and the removing of the centre to Motueka would entail considerable expense on licensees and others interested. Mr J. Patterson said that on the -Ith March a new Gazette notice appointed Mr. Scott of Takaka as the clerk, and Mr. J. S. Evans as chairman. This involved communication with Motueka on all licensing matters, as' the clerk was at Motueka and the Magistrate at Nelson. At Motueka there was only one professional counsel, whereas in Reefton, there were several. There were about 40 licensed houses in the Motueka district, and of these 31 were in the Inangahua district. The Inangahua County should have been consulted before any alteration was made. The resolution was put and carried unanimously. Mr. Dunn moved that a petition he sent around the district for signatures on the matter. We had been unfairly treated, and there must have beeif some underhand work in this respect.. Mr. Peddar seconded the motion, which was carried unanimous Mr. Phillips moved that the resolutions bo telegraphed to the Ministers of Justice and Internal Affairs, and ithe member for the district, also Messrs Seddon and Holland, M.P.'s. Seconded, by Mr. Noble and carried. TIMBER ROYALTIES.

The following- letter has been received from the Minister of* Lands, by the Inangahuft County Council with regard to Timber Royalties. "Referring, to your letters of the Ist November and 16th ult. I have to inform you that an considerable doubt existed as to the proper course to be adopted .with Royalties received from, timber on lands in Provisional State Forests which formerly comprised part of the Midland Railway Mining areas, it has been necessary to refer the matter to the Crown Law Office for its opinion. This opinion is to the effect that royalty from timber on the lands mentioned above should be credited asi goldfields revenue- and not as territorial revenue. The Receiver of Land Revenue has been instructed to make the necessary adjust ments in accordance with this ruling, and you will doubtless receive a com munication shortly from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Nelson, in this matter.
