COAL E AGREEMENT
REJECTED AT BLACKBALL. LOOPHOLES AND SIDETRACKS. On Sunday, February 29th an adjourned meeting of the Blackball Miners' Union was held in order to discuss the above agreement when Mr, J. McQuilken was in the chair, and the agreement went under the X-Rays. It appeared in such sections as • shorter hours and the minimum wage to be full of loopholes and sidetracks, in fact, as perforated as a sponge. The proposalSj the miners considered signified abject failure in many clauses, and left nothing but endless friction to be hoped for in the future. The Disputes Committee’s methods of settling disputes was trenchantly criticised as was also the attitude adopted by the employers’ representatives. The necessity of uniformity of wages for flat rate workers, was adversely discussed while the increases on pre-war rates were admitted to be just aboyt what was expected. When the division was taken only 25 members of the union stood by the agreement, the remainder rejecting’ it as a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
