THE RASHER
ITS THREATENED EXTINCTION. Time may come when the rasher of bacon may repose in a glass case in tho ethnological sections of the museums of the Dominion as food that our forefathers ate (says the Dominion). Competition for pork has been so keen, and diversion of skim milk to other piuposes, combined with dear, pollard and grain, lias effected so great a reduction in the Dominion’s tally of hogs that a bacon crisis has been reached. Hie rasher is not to be bought much under Is 8d to Is 10;I per pound, and not always the best, and therefore, the most economical cuts at that. With a view
to easing the position, and following the conference recently of the Prime Minister Avith representatives of farmers, becon clivers, wholesale distributors and retailers of bacon, the Government has decided to revoke the Ordevs-in-Council fixing maximum prices for bacon and hams. The effect of this revocation Avill be that prices of bacon and hams Avill no longer be controlled. The whole of the bacon cured in the dominion will, however, be available for dominon consumption, as, the export is prohibited, and in addition to this, Avith a view ■to augmenting supplies. the duty on bacon and hams imported from Australia lias been remitted. In this connection it may be re. called that Avhen on a former occasion the duty on bacon and hams for Australia Avas removed, the price for export to Ncav Zealand immediately advanced in Sydney and Melbourne to an amount corresponding to the duly.
