GREY FIRE BRIGADE.
: PRESENTATION OF MEDALS. Th members of the Greyniouth ■ Fire Brigade and representatives s from the Cobden Fire Brigade as- ; sembled at the Fire Brigade Station last night to bid farewell to Private ; Mcintosh and to present a medal and bars to members for sendee. Superintendent Clark proposed the . toast "The King," after which "God Save the King" was sung. In proposing the toast "Our Guest," Superintendent Clark stated that Private Mcintosh -had been an acquisition to the --—- 1 •—■•■-■-. ofthe Brigade, and all were extremely sorry to lose him. He hoped he would have a sate 'return and 1 again be able to join his old Brigade. Sub-Supt. Deere, in making Private Mcintosh the presentation of a, set of military hair-brushes, paid lie was a very «;ood fireman, and had excellent prospects. It was to he |)n"rd he would soon be buck. He asked Private Mcintosh to remember when using the brushes that the Brigade was still with him. Private Mcintosh then responded, and said it was a. great pleasure to him to accept the present. As all knew, he had not been long at the game of a fireman, but he was very keen. He thanked all very much for the present, and imped to come trek to give a hand in the Brigade once more. Mr. J. Steer (Chairman of the Fire Board) said that it gave him great pleasure to he there. It was great privilege to present to members a. medal and bars for their services. He was also pleased to be present to bid farewell to Private Mcintosh. The first of our boys who went to the front thought that itwould all be a joy-ride and that the war would be over before they <rot there. But they were greatlv mistaken, and those who had fallen were ?ime of the finest of •our manhood. They had fought and died a,s men and soldiers. Mr. Steer then presented to members their liars as follows : Fireman 11. Biocksage, for 19 years' service. Fireman Anderson, for 0 years' service. Fireman Evans, for 2 years' service beyond 23. Fireman Brown, for 2 years' service beyond 23. Fireman Benyon, for 21 years service. Fireman D'mibleton, certificate for 3 years' service and medal for 5 ;' service. The following members of the service had already received the 'Gold Star":—Supt. Clarke, Deputy Deere, Foreman Kennedy, Foreman : Grogan, Secretary Walton, Fireman Smith, Fireman McLeod. Mr. Steer remarked that the Greyniouth Brigade was held in high esteem all over New Zealand. The statement had been made that the Greyniouth Fire Brigade was one of the best, if not the best, in New Zealand. The members were all volunteer firemen, receiving practically no. remuneration whatever. The toast 'The members who had received the medal and bars," was honoured, and all the recipients responded. Secretary Walton proposed the toast "Cobden Fire Brigade," to which Captain Bright and Firemen ( White and Duncan responded. Foreman Grogan proposed the toast "The Fire Board," to which Mr. Steer responded. "Auld Lang Syne" and "God Save the King" were "sung, after which a vote of "thanks to the Press was
passed. It was then stated that if the members present cared to play euchre, a pri'/e had been donated by a. friend for the winner for the evenin-- A hosi.'tv vote of thanks to the donor was then passed, after which euchre was commenced.
