RUNANGA BAND.

; A PLEASANT EVENING. 1 A very pleasant evening was spent on Saturday last in the > band room of the Municipal Band ' at Ixunanga, when the bandsmen ■ and supporters met to welcome • the incoming Committee for the next twelve months and bid fare--1 well to the outgoing Committee. Mr E. McGuinness occupied the • chair in his usual capable nian- • ner, while Messrs David and Frank Kendrick supplied the music in first-class style on the piano and violin. The usual routine of toasts, etc., was gone through, beginning with the toast, "Our Noble Selves," proposed by the Chairman. Mr Jax. Braithwaite than proposed the . toast to "Local Institutions,'' coupled with the names of Messrs Morris (Borough Council), Par- . sonage (Schools), Satterthwaite (Co-op. Society) and Murray (Horticultural Society), all of whom suitably responded. Then followed the toast to "Kindred Sports," proposed by Mr W. T). Murray, coupled with the names of Messrs Hunter and Malpass (football), Mr Hester (fishing-), Mr A. Davidson (racing), Mr J. Alien (cricket), and Mr E. McGninness (boxing) Mr Murray (President of the Band) then asked all present to charge their glasses and drink the health of one of the bandsmen, who some weeks ago left the bachelor ranks to join the benedicts. In a few well-chosen words he asked Mr Bob Smith to accept a handsome cruet as a wedding gift from the bandsmen as a mark of appreciation, and hoped that he and his good wife wolud be long spared to enjoy a very happy mar- m ried life. Mr Smith suitably replied and thanked all bandsmen for ihe kind way they had made him this valuable and very nice present. Mr Cameron then proposed the toast of the Pumanga Municipal Baud and spoke of the rapid strides it had taken in its first year to come out as it bad done. He coupled with the toast the names of Mr W. 1). Murray (President), Mr Goo. Kerr (conductor), and Mr Jas. Braithwaite (secretary), all of whom responded in a very able manner. The toast to the Orchestra was proposed by Mr Satterthwaite and responded to by Messrs -las. Moore, E. Kendrick and E. McGninness. The Chairman then proposed the toast of the "Incoming Committee," and Messrs Sam TTnwin, and G. Little suitably replied. During the evening several gentlemen obliged with songs, recitations, musical items, etc., which were well received and by the talent shown by some of the local vocalists, Ruuanga will more than hold its own in competitions. Mr. Geo. Kerr was quite a surprise with his vocal item, and convinced all present that his knowledge of music was not limited to cornet playing alone, as he prove:! himself an all-round entertainer. The following' gentlemen also contributed items:—Messrs James Moore, J. Pender. E. Parsonage, A. Kinsey, T. Freeman, C. Cockburn, T. Parnell, -I. Isherwood, L. Hunt pi* ,E. McGninness, * G. Kerr and H. Henderson, all contributing songs, while Mr W. Kerr gave one or two choice solos on the madoline. Recitations, both interesting and were given by Messrs IT. Speakman, E. Parsonage, E. MoGuin-n<-'ss. J. TTnwin, L. Hunter and H. Morn's, which the sinp'in«- of "Auld Lang- Svne" terminated a very enjoyable evening.
