NEWS A ROUT THE WEST COASTERS CORPORAL O’BRIEN. His Majesty the King of the Belgians has been pleased to coaler upon Corporal J. 11. O’Brien, D.C.M., of Denniston, the Decoration Militaire. LIEUT. WILLIAMS. It is announced in general orders that Lieut. A. V. Williams, of the New Zealand Railway Battalion has been transferred to the 13th (North Canterbury and Westland) Regiment. LIEUT. B. F. SCANNER!,. Lieut. B. F. Scanned, formerly a wellknown commercial traveller on the West Coast, and Private Carson (Blackball), have returned from active service having arrived by the overland service from Christchurch yesterday. The former was gassed and wounded, and the latter is suffering from the effects of wounds and severe illness. COMMISSIONS GRANTED. The following officers of West Coast Cadet Corps_ on the unattached list prior to the war, and who have seen active service, have been promoted to lieutenants of the Territorial Force; William John Stone, Murchison; Herbert Campbell, Reefton: John Southward, Rnnanga; William John Melville Greymouth; Edward Holdsworth Buckeridge, Westport; Henry Alfred Millard Greymouth; Roy Liddelow, Reefton ; Guy Norman Morns, Murchison; Harold Roy Domigan, Westport ; William Thomas Garth, Greymouth ; Denis Quinlan O’Brien, Millerton ; and Allen James Farnell Rnnanga. LIEUT. REED. Lieut. P. F. Heartlev Reed (a native of Westport), sqm of Mr Frank Reed, Chief Inspector of Mines, who is serving in the Australian Forces, has received the Military Modal for his work in the operations near Bnlleconrt last May. General Sir W. R. Birdwnod wrote complimenting I,lent. Reed on “the great courage and determination lie displayed in leading a bombing party down 200 yards of enemv trench, inflicting heavy josses on the Get mans and sending back valuable information regarding communication trenches of which headquarters had been ignorant.” Lieut. Reed joined tl“e Australian Forces as a private at the outbreak of war, and has since been promoted to senior first lieutenant ot the 12th Battalion A.T.F. He is now the guest of Earl Darnley, of Cobhain Hall, recovering from his wounds. LIEUT. HENRY RASMUSSEN. Mr Rasmussen, Lycll has received a cable reporting that his son, SecondLieut. Henry Rasmussen was reported to lie out of danger on the 19th hist. WELCOME HOME SOCIAL. A welcome home social will be tendered to Private J. P, Royal by the residents of Ngahere at the Ngahere Hall tomorrow night. Private Royal, who lias been invalided home, left with the 17th Reinforcements, and was wounded in the Messines battle. Soldiers on leave and returned men are cordially invited to bo present. PRIVATE LESLIE WALTON. Mrs W. Walton of Chapel Street, Greymouth, has been advised by the Defence Department that her son. Private Leslie Walton, is being invalided home, and will reach New Zealand next month. Private Walton is the third son of Mrs Walton and left New Zealand with the 14th Reinforcements.
