GERMANY MUST RETAIN THEM. A “HERR PROFESSOR’S” OPINION LONDON, May 1. Professor Preuss, a director of the German New Guinea. Company, writing in the Hamburger Nachrichten, contends that Germany must re-estab. lish herself in the Pacific as the last opportunity for preventing its settlement by the Japanese, Americans and Britain, especially in Australia’s interests. It would be an unforgivable mistake to abandon the South Sea colonies and to, withdraw from the Paci_ fio so long as Japan and America are hostile, and Australia see* in Japan a dangerous competitor and opponent. Germany on no account must budge from the Pacific. The disappearance of the. German Hag from New Guinea and flte Pacific islands would mean an irreparable loss of prestige throughput the East. If they lose their naval bases Hie Germans will rank as mere carriers and traders, in whose faces the doorway will always he slammed. GERMANY’S AIM. TO ACT AS MISCHIEF-MAKER. LONDON, May 2. Professor Preuss's article m the Hamburger Nachrichten candidly explains. that Germany’s l whole object in the Pacific- must he to make mischief.
