PECULIAR MISHAP
DIVER HELD BY A HAUSER.
FIVE HOURS UNDER WATER

While endeavoring to free the Alararoa’s propeller from the Hauser, which turned, yesterday, the Union Company's diver, Smith, met with a peculiar mishap. He was working au the afternoon. About 5 o’clcck There was no response to the signals and this indicated that something was wrong. Two other divers were secured and went down and found Smith entangled and held tightly in the loop of the hawser. Nearly' two hours worn was necessary to free the line. Smith was uninjured though rather exhausted by his long immersion in the trying circumstances. He was altogthex hve hours under water.
