PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.
MEETING THIS MORNING,
A meeting of the Patriotic Coinm.ttcc whs held 'it the Council Chambers this morning, when there were piesent: llis Worship the Mayor, and Messrs D. McKay, J. Steer, J. • ( • White. J. D. Lynch, D. Carter, lelix Campbell, and W, D. Gilbert and P. !'■ Daniel ("joint hon. secs.) An apology was received irom Mi. D. Tennent. The following correspondence was dealt with ; The Under Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs wrote, acknowledging receipt of eight cases ot nift goods for Belgian Relief Fund, and regretting that the Government cannot undertake to pay insurance charges, but advising that goods could be insured for £1 5s 6d ordinary risk and £2 10s additional as special war Mr. Campbell moved ; rd Mr. White seconded, that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor to insure the goods if the nremium quoted is the total and not the rate per cwt. A circular letter was received from the Executive of'the Conference of Patriotic Societies, convening a meeting of delegates for July 28th at Wellington, to consider proposals in refeience to establishing a national fund, or otherwise for the relief of wounded soldiers, and also the matter of cooperation between the different patriotic committees collecting funds. After considerable discussion, air. Campbell moved and Mr. J. D. Lynch seconded, that his Worship the Mayor be asked to represent the local) committee at the conference. Carried. A long discussion took place on the stand the local delegate should take in ■reference to centralising. The matter of unauthorised persons collecting also came under review, and the question of the proposed carnival to be held in October, in aid ot the wounded soldiers. Mr. J. D. Lynch proposed, and My. D. Carter seconded, that a public meeting be held early date to discuss the question of the .. disbursement of the funds collected in aid of the wounded soldiers; also the matter of irresponsible persons collecting funds without being authorised, and generally to take the necessary steps to inaugurate the proposed carnival, to be held in October next, in aid of the Woulncled Soldiers 1, Fund. Carried. , , ~ , ■ Mr. D. McKay, on behalf of Mr. Jacobs, . Brunnei’tdn, offered a model of a North Sea trawler for disposal in aid of the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. This was accented witli thanks.
