The auxiliary scow Echo, for the safety of which some*anxiety had arisen, arrived last evening, 14 days out from Tarakohe. i it appears that there was no actual cause for alarm, the long duration of her passage j being simply due to her auxiliary engines ' being out of order and a strong southerly gale which sprang up when she was off Cape Foulwind last Friday. She brings a cargo of cement and general cargo, I partly for Greymouth and partly for Hoki- ! tika. She will probably get away for the 1 latter port on Saturday ,it being hoped 1 that by then her engines will be again in • good.going order. The ketch. Jane arrived from Westport this morning and sailed a couple of hours afterwards for Hokitika., having merely railed in to pick up an anchor and chain. Cnplnin W. A Smith, of Wellington.' one of the most widely known masters in the New Zealand coastal service, has been
granted a coastal pilot's certificate. Cap- * tain Smith was formerly master of the - trim little schooner Clyde and the Jessie ld | Niccol.
