At the conclusion of the Mangalainokn land ballot yesterday the following telegram was sent to the Prime Minister by the President of the Pahiatua District Progressive Association “Hon. W. F. Massey , Wellington.— “There are 350 disappointed applicants for the Mangatainoka block, all good settlers. There is an unsatisfied demand for land in this fertile district. I strongly urge you to hasten the subdivision of the Balfour estate.” . The following reply was received : I have referred your telegram regarding Balfour estate to. the Chairman of the Land Purchase Board. The Government will endeavour to supply land for those who require it.—(Sgnd.) Massey.” ■ The Bailour estate, which comprises 3000 acres of good land adjoining the town is owned by Mr A. J. Balfour, ex-Pnme Minister ol Great Britain.

It was offered to the Government some years ago for £ll 10s per acre, and has lately been, re-offered at something like £lB an acre.
