NO-LICENSE DISTRICTS
INFORMATION DISMISSED. [BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL TO THAT STAR.] DUNEDIN, This Day, ,A rather interesting case, under the previsions of the Licensing Act, regarding the sending of liquor into a nolicense district was decided in the Balclutha Court yesterday. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coinparty Avere proceeded against for an alleged breach of the law bearing on this matter. It appears that the firm consigned beer among other goods to Clinton and just notified the authorities of the fact that the liquor was included. The firm were informed that notification should be made at Balclutha and the authorities there laid an information on the ground that the label attached to the liquor did not specifically state its contents.
M. Grigor, for the defence, contended that the notification on the case was sufficient, the outside of the case bearing the words “Powley and Keast, bottlers of Speights Ale. This case contains so many dozen.” Mr. Bartholomew, S.M., upheld this contention and dismissed the case.
