Ernest Shackleton, seventeen years of age and residing at Linwjjd, whilst getting through a fence, the gun went off and he received the charge in his side. His condition is somewhat serious. John Campbell, nineteen years tnd residing at Addington ,when out shooting, slipped on a stone and to sav e himself threw the gun from him. It went off, however, and he received the charge in his foot and thigh. SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ASHBURTON, This Day.—A nasty accident occurred during the progrss of a bicycle road race on Saturday by which a boy named W. Shaw collided with another competititor and fell to the ground, striking his head with such force that he was rendered unconscious and has since remained so. The injuries to his head are very serious. MAORI LANDS SOLD. HASTINGS, This Day.—A very important sale of native land at Wainiarama, belonging chiefly to the estate of the late Mrs Donnelly, was held on Thursday. A total of nearly G,OOO acres was disposed of in areas ranging from 315 acres to 2,120 acres at prices running from £9 to £lB per acre. The total sales (including lands sold on account of other owners') represented ,£71,803 7s 6d. The sale was announced as being made under special authority to these particular lands conferred by the Maori Land Laws Amendment Act, 1908. THE MOKAU LAND DEAL. NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. Speaking at Weston on Friday night, Mr Okey returned to the charge that the Government sold 5,000 acres of Crown lands comprised in tlie Mokau block privately to the syndicate at one fifth its true value. He quoted the Committee’s report showing that the land was allocated to the Crown in 1906 in satisfaction of a survev lien and he drew attention to the Premier’s statement that this allocation was not cancelled until October last hr two months after Messrs Findlay, Dalziell and Company had paid the deposit for the land.
