Anderson and J. Balemi, Cobden, and L. Hahn, Paroa, were adjourned till this afternoon, as the Inspector bad reported that there vieie indications of Sunday trading going on at these places. The Inspector raised an objection to the licensee of the Wallsend Hotel on the ground that there was a side door leading, from the hotel, which though not actually connected with the library, opened" on to a four-foot passage, from which persons in the library could pass into the hotel, and the policeman stationed there could not see persons passing in and out on Sundays. He. desired to see that door closed, and having spoken to Mr Cain, the licensee, he had blocked it, but Mr Rathbone, the owner, had caused it to be opened again. He could not. contend that it was an internal means of communication, but he submitted that it afforded a means of exit and entrance that should not be allowed. Hence he had brought it before the Committee for them to order it to lie closed. Mr Hannan submitted that the door merely opened on to the right-of-way, which led to the back premises. The Inspector had asked for the urinal to be removed, and that bad been done as be wished. But it was no breach of section 19Q 0 f the Act on which the Inspector relied, and had threatened the licenser with proceedings under. The Chairman said they had no power to order the door which opened on to a right-of-way to he closed, and the licensee having satisfied the Inspector as tc the removal of the urinal no further action could he taken. Mr A. Gamble’s application for the name of his Reeffon Hotel to be changed from the Progress to the Coronation was agreed to, as there was no other hotel of the same name in the district. The Committee at 1 n.m. adjourned till 2.15 p.m. for the. hearing of the objections to the licenses named and for the applications for new wholesale licenses.
