PERSONAL NOTES.

Air, James McKay returned to town to-day after a visit to the North Island.

Mr. Gilbert Connors, who met with an accident at Dobson last week, is progressing favorably. , Mrs. Henniker, accompanied by hei neice, Miss Brett, left on Monday last, en route to London, where they attend the Coronation festivities. Mr. B. C. Warnes, formerly proprietor of the Petone Chronicle, is a: present on a brief visit to Greymouth, staying with his parents, Mr. and Airs. James Warnes. Mr. C. W. Cooke, who has been ap pointed district agent of the Public Trustee, arrived from Oamaru las evening. He was accompanied by his wife.

Mr. Adam Blair (Jnr), who had his leg fractured at Parata on Monday, -is as well as can be expected. It is as yet too early to say whether it will b. possible to save the injured limb. Mr. John Jackson, President of th Waterside Worker’s Federation, returned to town last night. He wai warmly congratulated by his many friends on bringing about an amicable settlement of the Patea dispute. His Honor Air. ' Justice Sim and Messrs J .A. McCullough (worker’s representative) and Mr. J. Scott (employer’s representative) arrived iron Christchurch last night and held a sit ting of the Arbitration Court here today.

The Hon. R. McKenzie is to have . contest for his seat in Parliambn at the coming general election, as Mi F. H. Durbridge, of Wakefield, h; informed the “Collingwood Argus” that he lias definitely decided to contest the Motneka seat in the. Opposi tion interest.

Air. G. P. Purnell, who has latelj been promoted to the head office of the Public Trust Department, leaves for Wellington on Friday morning. His many friends will wish him every good luck and rapid promotion in the service in the future.

Air. C. Smith, of Wellington, arrived in town from Reefton yesterday oi his usual tour of inspection of his various branches. Air. Smith is accompanied by Mrs. Smith. They ar. the guests of Air. and Mrs. E. J Smith,

Hon. David Buddo, Minister of Internal Affairs, wlio is at present paying his first official visit to the Wes; Coast, is accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Buddo, and Mr. J. W. Black (private secretary). Messrs P. C. Webb (President of the New Zealand Federation of Labour), R. Semple (organiser), J. Glover (secretary). P. H. Hickey and J. Dow gray (Westport), who attended a labour conference at Christchurch, returned to town last night. At the Christchurch Hospital on Saturday afternoon there was a gathering of the nursing staff and friends tc bid Sister Kitto good-bye prior to her leaving on the 28th inst. to take up the position of matron of the Greymouth Hospital. Afternoon tea was served, and games were played on the spacious lawn in the hospital grounds.

Mr. John Tennent, who represented the local Druid’s Lodge at the Druid’s Conference at Auckland, arrived home last evening. To Mr. Tennent belongs the unique distinction of being the first West Coaster to occupy a seat on the Grand Lodge of the Druidic Order, having, been elected Grand Guardian. We congratulate him cordially on his appointment. Mrs. Tennent accompanied her husband.

From a private letter to Mr. T. Pollard we learn that Messrs George Stephenson and A. Brahm’s Company, known as the “Merry Makers,” suffered a severe loss by fire a short time back in Australia. It appears that the fire took place during the performance and the company had scant time to get out with their lives. Miss Minnie Topping, who was here with the Pollard’s Opera. Coy., lost everything, including a good sum of money she had in her purse in the dressing room.
