LAWYERS' INCOMES. r i he Atwrney-General remarked today hi the Legislative Council that tlic average income made l by. legal practitioners in the smaller towns of New Zealand was much greater than the average income made in the cities and bigger centres. He knew for a fact lin.t there v»ero lawyers in the smaller towns earning incomes twice as large as the salaries > paid to the Judges. These men were" not few . LIQUOR IN NO-LICENSE AREA. The Hon. G. Jones has given notice to ssk the Minister of Justice whether or not statements now being made in New South Wales, in view of the impending local option vote in that State, based on the utterances from the Bench by Mr. V. G. Day, Stipendiary Magistrate, that "there arc more temptations to drink in no-license districts than in districts havng Icense, the liquor is kept in every house and the dipsomaniacs thus have many opportunities for secret drinking," are justified by the experience of the police inspectors in the no-license districts of the dominion? The question was greeted with cries of "Hear, hear" from some members of the Legislative Council when it was read to-dav. HISTORY OF THE CONTINGENTS. The Hon. W. 0. Smith asked the At-torney-General in the Legislative Council this afternoon when the official history of the operations of the New Zealand contingents in the South African war would be published. He urged that contingentcrs and their friends were "nturally anxious for this to be done. The country had suffered throng the non-publication of the records of the Waikato and other struggles, and young people wishing to know the history of the past h:d no means of gathering such information. Dr. Findlay stated in reply that the work was being pushed on as fast as possible, and though not yet complete was i.i course of revision. The question of its nub'ication would be considered immediately the work was finished.
