The bay gelding is beginning to shape up, and has already done a couple of good gallops on the plough. The New Zealand jockey, H. Cairns, has arrived in Melbourne under engagement to ride for D. J. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s winter meeting opened this afternoon in fine weather and there was a large attendance.- The remaining results are : Empire Handicap.—Sea Elf 1, Uranium 2, Sir Artegal 3. At the distance Uranium had Sir Artegal settled, but failed to stall off a strong challenge by Sea Elf, who finished strongly and tyon easily by three lengths. Time 2.16. Handicap Maiden Hurdles.—King Hippo 1, Matarere 2, Spectre 3. Arty fell on the flat. Time’ 3.6. Hauraki Hurdles.—Tui C'akabou 1, Armagh 2, Commander 3. Tu Cakabou and Armagh fought out a desperate finish, the former getting the verdict by a head. Time 3.57. Royal Handicap.—Lady Frances 1, Doggerbank 2, Impulsive 3. Won by a length. Time 1.32. Ngatarina Handicap.—Flying Soult 1, Maroon and Black 2, Captain Soult 3. Won by two lengths. Time 1.14.
