MR JOHN BURNS

One never knows exactly where Mr John Burns will turn up next (says the "Tribune"). A few clays ago he wac engaged in rescuing some children from a watery grave. The other i.if'ht he was at a fire in the Olapham road. "Last night," writes a irihuno" representative, "I saw the l-icht Hon. gentleman in the House of" Commons at half past ten, and again at one o'clock this morning 1 came across him on the embankment opposite Charring Cross bridge. The Cabinet Minister was scarcely recognisable, though he had but turned up his coat collar. Ho had been making a round of visits to Salvation and Church Army shelters, and he was at this moment about to mingle in the wretched crowd that nightly gathers at the Salvation rendezvous under Charring Cross bridge. Mr Burns- believes in what he sees with his own eyes, and he fully realises that ho must seo much in this way if he is to deal effectively with the derelicts of our social system. While Mr Burns stood unobserved among the crowd a tram car drew up, and the right Hon. genleman had tho satisfaction of seeing the tram conductor refuse to a'llow an intoxicated man to proceed as a *>ass<snger. As tho car moved off one of the passengers caught sight of Mr Bums, and remarked to the company, 'Why there ; s Mr Burns. He's out looking after tilings. That's tho sort of man to aboalf— and the observation evidently voiced the general sentiment."
